Above the line, on purpose: when a scale-up should spend beyond Meta.

The diminishing-returns curve is real

Meta and Google are demand-capture machines. They're superb at converting people who already want what you sell. What they can't do is manufacture demand that isn't there yet. Once you've harvested the in-market audience, you're bidding against yourself, and the CAC line only points one way.

Brand versus performance

The brands that break through the ceiling stop treating this as either/or. Performance captures demand; brand creates it. Above-the-line spend is how you become the name someone already trusts by the time your performance ad reaches them, which is exactly what makes the performance ad cheaper.

How to measure it without fooling yourself

The objection is always attribution. Fair. But brand spend leaves fingerprints: branded search volume, direct traffic, geo hold-out tests, and proper brand-lift studies. You won't get a neat last-click number, and chasing one is how brands talk themselves out of the very spend that would have unlocked the next stage.

When you're actually ready

Not everyone is. You're ready when repeat rate and contribution margin are healthy enough to fund a slower-burning channel, and when there's genuine category demand to grow into. Go too early and it's a vanity billboard. Go at the right moment and it's the thing that resets your whole acquisition economics.
